Abstract
1508327 Varistors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 27 June 1975 [1 July 1974] 27302/75 Heading H1K A multiphase transient voltage suppressor comprises a disc 10 of polycrystalline varistor material having at one face a plurality of grooves 11 dividing the face into lands 15, 16 and of which series an electrode 19, 20, and a single electrode 25 on the other face. The surface path between the opposite edges of each groove 11 is longer than the current path directly through the thickness of the disc 10. Each of the electrodes 19, 20 (of which there are preferably four separated by cruciform grooves) is connected to a lead 23, 24 extending out through plastics encapsulation 26, whereas electrode 25 is not externally connected. Under normal steady state conditions the resistance of disc 10 is of the order of thousands of megohms but a high voltage transient between leads 23, 24 reduces the varistor resistance there. between via two thicknesses of the disc 10 and the electrode 25 to a fraction of an ohm.
