Abstract

1366008 Varistors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 July 1972 [22 July 1971] 32801/72 Heading H1K A metal oxide varistor has two electrodes on one face separated by a gap defining the active part of the body. The body may be thick enough to be self-supporting or may be mounted on a glass, ceramic, or polymeric substrate. The varistor may comprise a coating on a ceramic substrate. In various embodiments one electrode extends over the edge of the body and across the second major face (Fig. 4), three electrodes definining two active gaps are formed on one major face (Fig. 6), and the gap is circular, star shaped, tapered and stepped (Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12 respectively). Two electrodes on one face may be combined with a third electrode on the other face to define a low voltage and a high voltage varistor in the same body (Figs. 7 and 8). As shown, Fig. 13, a varistor 31 having electrodes 32, 35, and mounted on a support 36 is provided with terminals 134, 135 and the active gap is protected with a dielectric glass passivation 136. The device may be mounted within a hermetic housing of a device to be protected against overvoltages or may be provided with a coating 137 of plastic or glass. The varistor may be a sintered ceramic metal oxide, e.g. basically ZnO with other metal oxide additives. The electrodes may be deposited using a mask or an initial overall layer may be formed and selectively removed to form the gap.
