Abstract

1507548 Photo-electric determination reflectance FELDMUHLE AG 10 March 1975 [9 March 1974 19 Dec 1974] 9944/75 Heading G1A Apparatus for testing a web 5 of plate glass or other specularly reflecting material for surface defects includes a laser source 2 acting with rotating polygonal mirror 3 to produce a light beam 4 scanning the web transversely of its feed direction, the specularly reflected beam 4a striking a frosted glass disc 6 where it is diffused and passed to a photo-multiplier 8. The disc closes an end of a housing 10, for the photo-multiplier, of which the internal surfaces may include fluorescent material or maybe reflecting e.g. the photo-multiplier may be at the focus of a parabolic mirror. A light stop 7 of which the aspect corresponds to the section of a biconvex lens is disposed before the disc. A beam-splitting glass disc 12 provides a beam to auxiliary photo-multipliers 14 in the zone of the web edge to discontinue measurement when beam 4 passes beyond the web edge. The light may be in the form of a spot; or a streak formed by a cylindrical lens between the laser and the mirror wheel.
