Abstract
1506099 Extractive distillation INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 28 Oct 1976 [28 Oct 1975] 44887/76 Addition to 1441372 Heading C5E Benzene and/or toluene are separated from a hydrocarbon mixture which also contains at least one more saturated hydrocarbon by extractive distillation using a polar solvent to produce a bottoms, which is distilled to produce a benzene and/or toluene product and recycle solvent, and a distillate which is passed through silica gel to remove polar solvent therefrom; the solvent retained on the silica gel is eluted with at least a portion of the hydrocarbon mixture which is to be subjected to the extractive distillation. A feed 1 is extractively distilled at C1 using a solvent such as dimethylformamide or dimethylacetamide and the bottoms extract 7 is separated at C2 into an aromatic product 8 and recycle solvent 2. The overhead 3 is condensed at 17 and passed through one of the two silica gel beds R 1 and R2 whilst the other bed is being regenerated by displacing the solvent by passage of at least a portion of the feed mixture through it from line 12 or 13. The first portion of the distillate passed through the freshly regenerated bed contains aromatics and can be recycled to the extractive distillation.
