Abstract
1430481 Distilling hydrocarbons INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 14 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 12232/73 Heading C5E Benzene or toluene is or both are separated from a mixture of one or both with at least one saturated paraffinic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, by introducing the mixture into an extractive distillation zone (C1) at an intermediate level (1), introducing an N-alkyl-aliphatic amide solvent of from 2 to 15 carbon atoms which can form an azeotrope with the least volatile saturated hydrocarbon in the mixture, in the liquid state, into the zone (6), introducing steam into the zone at a level (5) above that at which the solvent is introduced, withdrawing from the top of the zone a distillate (2) containing saturated hydrocarbons and steam but substantially free of solvent, withdrawing a condensate containing benzene or toluene or both and solvent from the bottom of the zone (7) and separating benzene or toluene or both from the solvent. As shown, this last separation is in a second distillation column CII, and the recovered solvent is recycled. The distillate from the first column is condensed at 10 and separated at D into two phases. The water phase is evaporated at 9 and provides the steam for the column; the hydrocarbon phase is divided into a reflux stream 3 and a discharge stream 4. Preferred solvents are dimethyl-formamide and dimethylacetamide. The feed may be a gasoline fraction obtained by pyrolysis, cracking, steam cracking or catalytic reforming.
