Abstract
1506001 Making linear measurements on bodies ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 21 March 1975 [27 March 1974] 11977/75 Heading G1N An apparatus for making linear measurements on a body, e.g. a pig carcase, comprises two hand held tools, one for measuring an external dimension of the body e.g. length or girth and the other for measuring a dimension within the body, e.g. back fat thickness. The first tool, Fig. 4, comprises a transducer 46 (131c in Fig. 3a), mounted within a cavity 41 of a housing 40 and having a resiliently biased cable 48 extending from the housing 40 and a first means (e.g. push buttons 44a, 44b for being manually operated for indicating when the amount of cable 48 required for the measurement has been pulled from the housing. The second tool, Fig. 5 (not shown) comprises a transducer as in the first tool, an insertion means, e.g. a knife, the depth of the insertion of which being measured by the output cable and a second means e. g. two push buttons for being manually operated for indicating when the depth of penetration of the insertion means has been measured by the cable. In the first tool the cable is biased inwardly of the housing and in the second tool the cable is biased outwardly thereof. The first and second tools are coupled to a terminal 33 which includes a first digital voltmeter 35 coupled to the first tool for converting a transducer signal therefrom into a first digital signal, a first buffer store 37 having one input coupled to receive the first digital signal and another input coupled to the first indicating means to control storing of the first digital signal. The terminal includes similar components and couplings for the second tool and an input-output device 39 coupled to the stores 37, 38 for feeding there first and second digital signals to a signal evaluating device remote from the body being measured. As shown in Fig. 3a a further buffer store is provided for each tool, the buffer stores being controlled by corresponding push buttons on the tools such that two successive measurements may be made with each tool and all the measurements stored. The terminal 33 is also provided with a power supply 34. As shown in Fig. 3b each transducer comprises a potentiometer 131c, a trimmer potentiometer 131d being provided for calibration purposes.
