A protractor calibrated in terms of standard deviation is used in combination with a graph drawn on Arithmetical Probability paper and on which are plotted at least two points each representing a value of the mass per unit length of a cigarette rod against the percentage frequency with which that value was exceeded in a sample represented by the point, to read off the standard deviation of the mass per unit length. The protractor is calibrated so that the percentage standard deviation of the information represented by the line joining these points may be read directly by measuring the slope of the line. In a modification a further arc of dots on the protractor is used to show a predetermined percentage tolerance of the standard deviation calibrations. Specification 929,337 is referred to.
