Abstract

1505646 Battery LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 9 May 1975 [23 July 1974] 32459/74 Heading H1B A battery comprises a plurality of cells each including first and second compartments 15, 23 for the electrolyte and the active components respectively, a closure member 32a sealing the compartments from each other, and a piercing member 33 operable to rupture the member so that the electrolyte can flow into compartment 23 to activate the cell, the members being carried by a single support member 41 urged into a non-operative position by resilient means 39 or (e.g. a washer). The cell may form part of a metal-air battery (Fig. 1, not shown), the electrolyte being KOH, the anode (24) bemg Cu plus compressed Zn powder (80% porous) separated from air electrodes (18) by porous resin sheets (25), a catalyst (22), an expanded metal mesh (21) and a porous sheet (19) (e.g. unsintered PTFE). When member 41 is operated, lugs 43 thereon engage a shoulder 45 of a housing 42 so that washer 39 is held against wall 38 of passage 31 to seal opening 37 therein. A strip 46 of material absorbent to the electrolyte is provided to facilitate transfer thereto between compartments 15 and 23.
