Abstract
1467708 Zinc-air cells GOULD Inc 6 Nov 1974 [30 Jan 1974] 47968/74 Heading H1B A zinc-air cell comprises a first metallic cupshaped member 12 containing anode material 13 of e.g. amalgamated Zn, a second metallic cup-shaped member 11 containing a cathode 30-33, the two cups being received together as shown with an insulating member 14 therebetween. In a process for manufacture of the cell, the components are assembled and the assembly is compressed in a sizing die to reduce the diameter of the cup 11, and thereby create an electrolyte-tight seal with the member 14 particularly where the edge portion 27 of the cup 11 is bent inwards in the sizing process. The compression of member 11 is taken up in raising dome 23. The cathode comprises a screen 31 compressed at its periphery with the cup 11, a C-black material 32, with a catalyst and hydrophobic binder, a p.t.f.e. member 30 and separator 33. Holes 21, 22 provide ingress of gas to the cell.
