Abstract

1489576 Metal-air batteries ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 20 Dec 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 45330/73 Heading H1B In a zinc-air battery, the face of each air electrode remote from the associated zinc electrode is exposed to an air space 39 in a case having slots 40 in its sides and or bottom to admit air to the space. Each zinc electrode 10 is made by pressing a dry powder mixture of zinc oxide, potassium hydroxide and possibly mercuric oxide on to an expanded metal screen 11 followed by electrochemical reduction to zinc. A separator 15 is three layers of non-woven cellulose round each zinc electrode. Each air electrode 20 is a sheet of catalysed powdered carbon and hydrophobic binder with a woven wire or expanded metal current collector 21 on one side and porous P.T.F.E. 22 on the other. The case is built up from injection moulded polystyrene frames each carrying two air electrodes with their P.T.F.E. sides against the inward ridge 38 a perforated corrugated P.V.C. sheet 45 keeping the air space open. The electrolyte is stored in a rupturable plastics bag 60, ducts 51 and vents 55 being provided. The rupture pull-cord 64 is surrounded by a collapsible sleeve 71 for sealing. Alternatively, an 0-ring may be used (65, Fig. 7, not shown). The lid may contain electrolyteleakage indicator paper. A wick (not shown) extends across the upper ends of ducts 51, which are broadened to form a common trough 53 to siphon excess electrolyte to an auxiliary reservoir (not shown) to prevent intercell connection due to absorption of water in humid air conditions.
