A rechargeable metal-air cell comprises a metal as negative active material in the charged state and an aqueous solution of a salt of the metal with a non-volatile oxy-acid as electrolyte in the charged state. The metal may be Zn, Cd, Fe or Mn and the anion may be sulphate, selente, borate or perchlorate. The electrolyte may also include sulphide ions and a salt of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminium, e.g. potassium metaborate. The air electrode may be of Pb, Ta or C. In the cell illustrated the case 1 and partition walls 2 are of galvanized copper and constitute the negative electrode. Lid 7 is of insulating material. Air duct 5 is supplied by a fan or pump (not shown). Each air electrode 3 comprises a corrugated lead plate 11, engrained with catalyst metal and enclosed between sheets of microporous insulating material 13.
