Abstract

1504902 Rotary conveyers ELI LILLY & CO 7 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 19096/75 Heading B8A [Also in Division B2] Capsules 10 are loaded from a hopper 32 into buckets 28 carried by a chain conveyer 22 and are transferred at a feed station 35 by a transfer wheel 26 to vertical grooves 66 in an inspection head 36. The grooves are defined by a circumferential series of rolls 50 which spin the capsules on their own axes and the capsules are retained in contact with the rolls by suction applied through air passages 68. The head 36 is indexed forward to carry capsules stepwise from the feed station 35, through an optical-electronic inspection station 45, to a transfer station 55 where the capsules are transferred to a pick-off wheel 40 which is indexed forward in timed relation with the head 36. The capsules are received on spaced seats 88 on the wheel 40 and held thereon by suction applied through air passages 92. Each unacceptable capsule is swept off the pick-off wheel 40 into a shoot 42 by a reject arm 120 which is projected (as shown in dotted line in Fig. 2) into the capsule path by a rotary solenoid 126 which is actuated in response to the inspection results at station 45. Acceptable capsules are carried further by the wheel 40 to a discharge point where a cam 134 removes them to a shoot 44.
