Abstract

1504656 Breaking emulsions electrolytically GHISALBERTI SpA 28 May 1976 [28 May 1975] 22327/76 Heading C7B A stable colloidal aqueous emulsion is broken electrolytically using d.c. to cause flocculation, the flocculate is allowed to agglomerate while the liquid passes upwardly and finally the agglomerated mass is decanted while clarified water is removed at a higher level. In the figure, the suspension passes upwardly between Al electrodes 11 and is then fed to the bottom of hopper 4 where agglomeration occurs. Net 12 prevents agglomerates falling out of the hopper. The hopper has a wier 10 at its top over which the decantation occurs of agglomerate 13, and is surrounded by a larger chamber 6 whose edge 7 is above the level of wier 10 and acts as a water overflow into trough 8. The polarity of electrodes 11 may be intermittently reversed.
