Abstract

1503093 Regenerating active carbon from water treatment NITTETU CHEMICAL ENG Ltd 1 April 1976 [4 April 1975] 13328/76 Heading C1A Activated sludge containing active carbon powder, from waste water treatment, is treated to regenerate the active carbon by (i) dewatering and at least partially drying the mixture to form a powder, (ii) dispersing the powder in a furnace where it is vigorously agitated by high-velocity hot combustion gases from a burner, under conditions to selectively decompose the sludge and organic substances on the active carbon and gasify them, and so to regenerate the active carbon; and (iii) recirculating the active carbon to the aerator of the water treatment process. Preferred operating conditions in the furnace are 800-1000‹ C., oxygen concentration less than 5% by volume, and powder residence time of 0À3-5 seconds. The regenerated active carbon may be treated with acid, e.g. HCl at pH 2, to reduce its ash content prior to the recirculation.
