Abstract
1501647 Thermal insulation FHD FURNACES Ltd 27 Nov 1975 [16 Jan 1975] 1958/75 Heading F2X [Also in Divisions E1 and F4] A furnace having thermal insulation at least partially comprised by a cellular structure having internal walling and a fibrous insulating filling, the said structure having at least one gas inlet to the interior thereof and the internal walling forming a tortuous gas flow path from the said at least one gas inlet through the interior of the structure. As shown, the insulation comprises a series of linked hollow compartments 2 filled with fibrous material 1, the walls of each compartment being apertured to define a tortuous flow path 4 through the insulation from a gas inlet 3 to a gas outlet 5. The gas may be used for cooling the furnace or for preheating purposes. The insulation may also be in a tubular form (Fig. 2, not shown). The thermal insulation may be used in the hearth, walls and roof of an open hearth furnace (Fig. 4), a batch furnace (Fig. 6), or in a sintering furnace with (Fig. 10) or without (Fig. 9) electric resistance heating elements.
