Abstract

1,254,942. Consuming noxious gases. C. A. KAROLIDIS. 25 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 10077/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] An afterburner comprises two metal casings 17, 21, Fig. 4 and an intervening air gap 19 the inner casing 17 being covered externally by thermal insulating material 18 arid enclosing an open-ended metal case 15 having an inner wall of refractory material forming a passage with straight and zig-zag sections an electrical furnace 4 and a heat absorbing assembly 12. The passage has obstacles (6, 7, 10, 11), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the refractory material which contain the furnace flames. The furnace 4 has longitudinal passages 7 containing electrical resistances capable of being heated to 400-850‹ C. and the assembly 12 has similar resistances disposed transversely to the gas flow but not supplied with current. Air from a blower is pre-mixed with exhaust gases from a muffler at a rate which may be variable in dependence on engine speed or accelerator pedal position. The furnace temperature may be controlled by a rheostat.
