Abstract

1501645 Space-dyeing yarns TILLOTSON CORP 7 Jan 1975 [11 Jan 1974] 566/75 Heading D1L [Also in Division B6] In a method of treating textile yarns prior to storage or formation into fabric, the yarns are received tension-free and in over lapping plaits on a conveyor belt, forwarded through a treatment station passed while still on the conveyor belt through a pair of nip rollers and pulled of the belt at a speed sufficient to implant the yarn and apply a pre-determined tension against the reaction of the nip rolls. In a preferred embodiment the yarn is subjected to a predetermined tensile force or combination of forces in order to test for flaws, Fig. 3 (not shown), and is then passed to printing station 6, Fig. I comprising roller pairs with each pair being arranged so that the yarn travels through the nip at an angle of 60 to 85‹ to the plane including the roller axes, Fig. 5 (not shown) this allows concentration of dyestuff built up on the nip to fall away from the yarns when a roller is raised e.g. in spacedyeing. The printed yarns fall under gravity and is restrained by chute 114 so as to be laid in overlapping plaits on conveyor belt 116 passing through steam chamber 8 to fix the dye; the belt 116 and yarn pass between nip rollers 196, 200 and the yarn is tensioned by floating roller 204 prior to passage through cascade washing apparatus 10. The apparatus 10 includes two stacked arrays of co-operating rollers, water being sprayed beneath the top rollers which operate to squeeze water out of the yarn, Figs 10 and 11 (not shown). The yarn is again deposited in overlapping plaits on conveyor 231, with the aid of chute 232 and passed through drying chamber 12 to exit nip rollers 238, 240, where the yarn is pulled off the belt and drawn by tensioning roller 258 through an aligning and shuffling apparatus 14 where the yarns in sheet or web-form are laterally re-arranged. In turn the yarn then passes through accummulator 16, a de-alignment mechanism 18, and onto a tufting machine 20 and carpet inspection apparatus 22.
