Abstract

1501103 Containers for carbonated beverages PLASTONA (JOHN WADDINGTON) Ltd 28 Jan 1975 [12 March 1974 19 April 1974] 10923/74 and 17348/74 Heading B8D A container for carbonated beverages comprises a side wall of circular transverse crosssection and a base which includes a central recessed portion 18 connected to said side wall by a ring portion having an upwardly extending rim 20 and a base ring 16A on which the container can stand. The central recessed portion 18 is more resistant to inversion than the rim 20 when the container is subjected to internal pressure so that if the container is subjected to sufficient internal pressure the rim 20 will invert whilst the central portion 18 remains recessed so that the container can be stood on an annular region 22<SP>1</SP> connecting the central portion and the rim. The central portion 18 is generally conical and may include reinforcing ribs 18A. The material at the apex of the conical central portion is thicker than that of the remainder of the base. The container may comprise a single thickness of plastics material or an outer case and an inner liner. The outer case may be made of polystyrene, polypropylene or polyethylene and the lining material may be acrylic material, polyvinyl chloride or a co-polymer thereof, or a coating of "Saran" (Registered Trade Mark). There may be an intermediate layer of A.B.S. between the lining and outer case. The filled container is closed by a metal cap 14 having a ring-pull opening device.
