Abstract

1501080 Storage heater control circuit HOTPOINT Ltd 21 Feb 1975 [6 Dec 1973] 56495/73 Heading H2H [Also in Division G3] A fan storage heater incorporates a control circuit for operating the fan motor 14 to maintain a flow of air through the heater in dependence upon the temperature sensed by a temperature sensing device 17, which circuit also includes switch means SW operable to modify the operation of the fan for maintaining an airflow, when the heater is working from an offpeak supply, which is lower than that produced during peak-period operation at the same sensed temperature. As shown, a shaded pole A.C. motor 14 is connected in series with the A.C. terminals of diode bridge 21 across an A.C. supply. The circuit is completed via thyristor TH which is turned on at a point in the input ¢-cycles by the output from transistor pair TR1, TR2 which compares the voltage on capacitor C1 with that at the junction of negative coefficient thermistor 17 and resistor R2. In operation capacitor charges via R1, R4 and D1 and subsequently more slowly via R1 and R3, the rate of charging being set by temperature control potentiometer BV1. The firing point within the ¢-cycle of thyristor TH being set by both the rate of charge of capacitor C1 and the resistance value of thermistor 17. To achieve the required modified operation a normally open switch SW in series with a fixed resistor R8 and a potentiometer RV2 is connected in parallel with the thermistor so that closure of the switch connects resistances R8 and RV2 in parallel with the thermistor to effectively reduce its value. This parallel circuit may alternatively be connected across setting resistor RV1.
