Abstract

150,004. Creed, F. G. Nov. 25, 1918. Ships supported on separate floats.-The deck or superstructure is supported on three or more floats so disposed as to give maximum stability in all directions. The floats may be rigidly or flexibly connected to the superstructure. In the example shown in Fig. 1, three floats c<1>, c<2> are used, two ahead on the centre line and one astern. The superstructure a is equipped with cabins, holds, &c. according to the purpose for which the vessel is used. Steering and trimming is effected by making the float c adjustable in all directions, being mounted and constructed as shown in Fig. 3. The float c is secured to a hollow pillar b and is pivoted on a trunnion g supported from a turntable i. The upper part of the pillar b is fitted with curved guides f engaging corresponding guides on the turntable i. The float c is tilted by means of worm-gearing u and turned about its vertical axis by means of rack gear m, n as shown. These movements enable the vessel to be trimmed and to be steered. Propellers are fitted at both ends of the forward floats, and in a modification, vertical and horizontal vanes are fitted to the floats to assist steering and trimming. Auxiliary floats may be fitted to the main floats to act as stabilizers.
