PATENT MEANS FOR SUBIVlE-RGING SUBIVIARINE BOATS.
sPEoIFIcAT'IoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,525, dated Ma 2, 1905.
Application filed August 22, 1904. Serial NO. 221343.
To on whom, it inc/y concern:
Be it known that 1, RAIMONDO LORENZO DE UEVILLEY, a subject of the King of Spain, and 'a resident of Kiel, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Submerging Submarine Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to submarine boats, and especially to the class of submarine boats that are somewhat lighter than the amount of water they displace when completely submerged, thereby possessing a certain rising tendency. In such boats it is very difficult to obtain stability of the direction of travel in the vertical plane, as the longitudinal stability and the hitherto-used horizontal fins at the stern do not suifice for this purpose.
The object of the present invention is to remove these difiiculties by providing a simple device which makes it possible to cause submarine boats to travel below the water-level in a line that deviates as little as possible from the straight line. I attain the said object by means of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-.
Figurel is a side view of a submarine boat provided with my improved steering device, and Big. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
The body or hull A of the boat is at the stern provided'with two fixed fins B B, symmetrically arranged relatively to the longitudinal axis of the boat and set at a slight angle to the horizontal plane through the middle of the craft. The surface dimensions of the. fins are comparatively great, and'the object of the fins is to create a downwardly-directed component of the reaction of the water during the forward travel of the craft. The fins also accomplish the purpose of the customary horizontal fins viz, they impede the deviation of the boat from the direction of travel by means of the resistance created. At the bow of the hull two rudders D D are arranged rotatably on a horizontal axis and capable of being operated from the interior of the boat. During the travel below the water-level the rudders may be operated either by hand or automatically in such a manner that they too create a downwardly-directed force component, which, together with the component created by the fins B B, opposes the rising tendency of the boat and insures the equilibrium of the boat during travel. The positions of the fins B B and the rudders D D must of course be such that the moments of stability of the vertical force components created during travel relatively to the center of buoyancy are equally great and that the entire system be thus balanced during travel.
By means of the device above described a great dynamic stability is imparted to the boat during travel below the water-level in addition to the static stability, and the resistance to deviation of the boat from the desired direction of travel is therefore much greater than when the hitherto-used horizontal fins are employed.
The front rudders D D must be adjusted according to how much it is desired to have the direction of travel deviate from the horizontal plane, and the rudders. therefore, in addition to their object above described, effect the raising and lowering of the boat.
As shown in Fig. 2, two fins G C are preferably arranged within the fins B B. The fins C C are rotatable around a horizontal axis and may be adjusted from the interior of the boat. The fins 0 C may be arranged adjacent to the fins B B instead of within the same.
According to the position of the fins G O the downwardly-dirccted vertical component created by the fins B B is enlarged or diminished, and it is thus possible by adjusting the fins G C to vary the vertical component to suit the circumstances. Since conditions are likely to change as, for instance, when heavy weights on the boat are displaced-thefins C C provide for means for changing the force component created by the fins B B to suit the altered circumstances.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new therein is 1. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to one end of the boat at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same, and a rudder rotatably arranged around a horizontal axis at the other end of the boat.
2. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to one end of the boat at either side thereof at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same and symmetrical relatively thereto, and a pair of rudders rotatably arranged around a common horizontal axis at the other end of the boat and on either side thereof.
3. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to the stern of the boat at either side thereof at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same and symmetrical relatively thereto, and a pair of rudders rotatabl y arranged around a common horizontal axis at the bow of the boat and on either side thereof.
4. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to the stern of the boat, and forwardly inclined to form an angle to the longitudinal axis of the boat, and a pair of rudders rotatably arranged at the bow of the boat.
5. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to one end of the boat at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same, a pair of fins rotatably arranged around a horizontal axis at the end of the boat where the fixed fins are located, and a rudder rotatably arranged around a horizontal axis at the other end of the boat.
6. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to one end of the boat at either side thereof at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same and symmetrical relatively thereto, a rotatable fin in each of said fixed fins, and a pair of rudders rotatably arranged around a common horizontal axis at the other end of the boat and on either side thereof.
7. In a submarine boat, a steering device comprising a pair of fins fixed to the stern of the boat on either side thereof and forwardly inclined to form an angle to the longitudinal axis of the boat, a rotatable fin in each of said fixed fins, and a pair of rudders rotatably arranged around a common horizontal axis at the bow of the boat on either side thereof.
The foregoing specification signed at Kiel, Germany, this 6th day of August, 1904.
