Abstract

1499317 Propelling air-cushion vehicles; paddle wheels MACKLEY-ACE Ltd 20 Oct 1975 [7 Oct 1974] 43421/74 Headings B7K and B7V An air-cushion vehicle is propelled by surfaceengaging wheels 24 which are retractable into the body of the vehicle. The wheels are mounted on arms 23 which are pivotable about an axis 25 by means of an hydraulic jack 26. The wheels are located outside the cushion skirt 6, 7, 8, but alternatively, in the case of vehicles for the purpose of carrying heavy loads, the wheels and their supporting structure may be located within the cushion space. The wheels may be provided with paddles 42, Fig. 5, or endless tracks. Several combinations of wheels, paddles and retractable supporting structures are disclosed. The cushion-forming fluid may be water and vehicle can be steered by differential use of the wheels. The paddles 42 may be provided beside a tyred wheel or sandwiched between two wheels (Fig. 6, not shown). Alternatively, paddles (64), Fig. 15 (not shown), may be provided on a cylindrical steel rim (61) of a driving wheel (60), the interior of the wheel being filled with foamed plastics to provide buoyancy.
