Abstract

1438014 Wind propelled vehicles for travel on land or sea or ice R B BLACK 30 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40939/73 Headings B7A B7B and B7V A wind propelled vehicle which may be adapted to travel on one of either land or water or ice includes a mast 16, tubular frame members 18, 19 and 21 of substantially equal length which are joined together and to the foot of the mast 16 by a central fixture 17 and form substantially equal angles with each other, surface engaging elements arranged on the free ends of the members and a triangular sail 102 having its peak secured to the mast top and the other corners to the free ends of the first and second frame members. In a preferred embodiment the vehicle is a water craft, in which the surface engaging elements are forwardly mounted (with respect to a direction of travel 13) triangular floats 11, 12 and an aft platform 14 for supporting a swimmer, and stays 32-34, 36-39 brace the mast and frame members. A fin 41 is mounted on a tube 42 beneath the fixture 17 so as to be turnable about a vertical axis by means of a line 58 for controlling the course of the craft and pivotal about a pin 44 by means of a line 52 for controlling the directional stability of the craft. The line 52 passes through pulleys mounted on the floats 11, 12 (Fig. 3, not shown, jamming cleats 92, and an eye 93 mounted on a board 61 connected to the third frame member 21 (Fig. 9) and the line 58 passes around a pulley 59 on the board 61. The platform 14 is flexibly connected to the board 61 by a flexible rubber diaphragm 77 and includes planing surfaces 69, 71 a pair of juxtaposed side fins 73 and padding/ buoyancy means 84. The lines 52 and 58 are manipulated to control the craft by a swimmer on the platform 14. In an alternative embodiment for towing another craft or swimmer, the platform 14 is replaced by a downwardly depending fin which is rotatable about a vertical axis and line 52 is dispensed with. For travel on ice, the front floats 11, 12 are replaced by convex skids, a rotatable ice blade replaces the fin 41, and a bladed ice vehicle or an iceskater is towed. For travel on land, the front floats are replaced with castors, a wheel and axle replaces fin 41 and a suitable wheeled vehicle is secured for towing.
