1498924 Glass melting furnace GOSUDARST N I INST STEKLA USSR and MOSKOV ENERGETICH INST USSR 3 Feb 1976 04090/76 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] A glass melting furnace of cylindrical crosssection comprises an upper chamber and a lower chamber of larger diameter joined by intermediate member 6 (Fig. 1), heated by tangential fuel burners in upper chamber, with exhaust gases leaving by pipe 5 and feed entering by pipes 4, and has a cooled hollow body 7 with its top above the level of the melt to increase the hydrodynamic stability of the melt. The body 7 may have holes therein through which the glass flows to the cooling and refining sump or an insulated pipe 8 may be provided for this flow.
