Abstract
1498817 Oxide coated electrolysis electrodes MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd 20 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974 14 Feb 1975] 46710/74 and 6393/75 Heading C7B An electrode is prepared by anodically coating a substrate surface of Ta, Ti, Hf, Nb, Zr, an alloy thereof, Pb or Ni with at least two layers of TiO 2 from a bath containing Ti ions (e.g. from Ti 2 (SO 4/3 ) at least the first layer being heated at 100-800‹C before further coating, and then applying at least one conductive layer of Pt group metal and/or oxide. This last layer may also include a valve metal oxide and is applied from a solution of thermally decomposable compound(s) followed by heating. Additional layers include; a primer of fibrous or angular Zr oxide which may include a Pt metal (oxide); a Pt metal (oxide) applied to the substrate and/or between successive TiO 2 layers; layer(s) applied at any stage of finely divided oxide of Ti, Zr, Nb, Si or a mixed oxide e.g. a garnet or spinel; and a final coat of Ta oxide applied thermochemically. The finely divided oxide may be applied in an acrylic polymer carrier which is subsequently fired off. The substrate may include wire, mesh or plate forms, and is degreased and etched in oxalic or sulphuric acid before coating. Recoating of the active layer may be effected without affecting the TiO 2 layers, any calcareous deposits being removed in HNO 3 .
