Abstract

Field carriages.-Relates to two-wheeled transport members for dismounted howitzers and their carriage elements, and consists in means whereby the unloaded transport members may be formed into a train of connected vehicles and withdrawn to the rear of the firing position. Such means comprise link members adapted to engage with the transport members and to utilize, for the purposes of connexion, the devices provided for securing the loads to the transport members. The howitzer bed is carried by a carriage 5, 4, 5a and a limber 8, 6, 8a, and is secured thereon for transport by tapered horns on the bed fitting into tapered holes 16, 16a and 19, 19<a> in the axletrees 6, 4 respectively. When the bed is removed from the carriage and limber, the link member 22 is substituted and makes a rigid connexion by means of tapered horns fitting into the holes 16, 16a, 19, 19<a> in the axle-trees. A carriage 10<a> and limber 13a carry the howitzer carriage-body and cradle, the carriage 10<a> and limber being rigidly connected by a link member 30 when unloaded. The link member 30 is attached to the rear axle-tree by a tapered screw plug secured by a nut, and to the forward axletree by two clips. The members for transporting the bed and the cradle and carriage-body are connected to each other by suitable links and also to the howitzer transport carriage which is connected to a tractor. The cradle-carrying limber 13a may be reversed, and the link 30 is then connected directly to the coupling 21.
