WAGON-TONGUE.
Application filed May 4, 1918. Serial No. 232,675.
varying widths between the hounds and in order to adapt it to use when the wagon or truck to which it is attached is used either with horses or as a trailer. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like parts are designated by like letters and wherein Figure l is a top view ofthe tongue as extended for use with horses, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the tongue as folded for use on a trailer; andFigs. 3 and 4 are views of details as hereinafter described.
In Fig. 1 to shows the front wheels of a wagon on the front axle a. h it show the hounds common to most heavy'wagons and trucks. 6 shows the two iron sides or members of the rear section of the tongue, which may be of any suitablewidth and depth of band or channel or other suitable section of iron. 0 and a are eyelets suitably attached to the side members b of the tongue by rivets or otherwise. f f are loops or eyelets turned on the ends of the eyeletsc and serving as points of attachment for the draft bars 9 g, one of which passes under the'doubletree j (as shown in a side view in Fig. 4) and one passes above the doubletree. 2' passes through loops on the ends of the draft bars all as clearly shown on the drawings. 6 is the bolt or traction rod upon which the tongue turns Vertically and by which it is held to and between the hounds.
t t are turnbuckles set between the side members Z of the tongue for the purpose of adjusting them firmly to the inner surfaces of the hounds h it. Through the ends of the turnbuckle screws, and within the eyelets c and c, are drilled holes d (Fig. 3) through which are placed cotter-pins to hold the screws and prevent their turning in the eyelets. B B are the side-members of theforward section of the tongue, (the folding section) which is pivotally connected to the 7 sides I) of the rear section by bolts or rivets Specification of Letters Patent.
A draw-bolt g g and through the doubletree,
Patented Get. 29, 1918.
at k k, and about these, as'on an axis, the forward section of the tongue turns into the folded posit-ion shown in Fig. 2. A drawbar m passes through the rear end of the forward section and through the guide-plate Z and terminates in the eyelet 0. About the drawbar m is the sprin s, held in position by the nut 17.. \Vhen the tongue is extended, as shown in Fig. 1, a bolt 39 is passed through the side members I) and through the eyelet 0 on the end of the drawbar m thus holding the forward section of the tongue in rigid alinement with the inner or rear section.
The side members B B of the forward section of the tongue may be drawn'together at their outer ends as shown and suitably fastened to a wooden member or filler u, the end of which may be finished with an eyelet a such as is seen on most wagon tongues. But the details of the finishing of the end of the .tongue do not constitute an element in this invention.
If it is desiredto use the wagon or truck as a trailer it is desirable to be able to quickly shorten the tongue and to have a sprin pull on the drawbar. In that case, and wit this improved tongue, remove the bolt 2 and turn the forward section of the tongue on its axial hearings it 70 into the position shown in Fig. 2. Then replace the bolt 19 which now holds the two sections of the tongue in rigid juxtaposition as shown in Fig. 2. The
spring draw-head is now in position to useby attachment to the draw-eyelet 0.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, novel, and useful, and on which I desire Letters Patent is':-
1. In a wagon tongue the combination of a rear section composed of two side members of iron adjustably spaced between the hounds of the wagon by means of turnbuckles; and a forward section composed of two connected side members of iron pivotally connected to and between the side members of the rear section whereby said forwardsection may be turned backward into a horizontal position in alinement with and between the side members of the rear section.
2. In a wagon tongue the combination of a rear section composed oftwo side members of iron adjustably spaced between the hounds of the wagon by means of turnbuckles; and a forward section composed of two connected side members of iron pivotally connected to and between the side members of the rear section whereby said forward section may be turned backward into a horizontal positlon in alinement with and between the side members of the rear sec- 5 tion; and a spring-controlled drawbar set between the sides of the rear end of the forward section, and forming the forward end of the tongue when the forward section thereof is folded backward into a horizontal position in alinement with and between the side members of the rear' section of the tongue.
