Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM BLUME, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
WAGON-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,757, dated April 27, 1886. -A pplication filed November 12, 1885. Serial No. 182,535. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BLUME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vagon Springs and Gears,of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to that class of wagons used as a means of personal conveyance or for pleasure, commonly called buggies.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient arrangement of springs and gear for vehicles of the class above referred to; and this object I accomplish by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan, looking down, with the wagon'body removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
A is the forward axle.
B is the rear axle.
O is a wide Wood head-piece.
D and D are wood springs and reach combined, fastened rigidly with the rear axle, B,
U at one end and the head-piece O at the other end.
E and E are cross-pieces, firmly secured by metal clips to the wood springs D and D.
F is a piece firmly secured to E and E.
H and H are springs secured to E and E by clips, and carry at their extremities the bars G and G, upon which is set and attached the wagon-body.
I is a metal spring, secured at its center to the'cross-pieces E and E by clips and with F by a bolt. One extremity of this spring is connected with the rear axle and the other with the head-piece G by means of leather or other flexible straps, K and K, having the buckles m and m, so that the tension on the spring may be increased or diminishedin proportion to the load to be carried.
I am aware that prior to my invention wagon-springs have been made combining wood and metal springs. I therefore do not claim such combination, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the front and rear axles and the head-piece of the former, of the two outer wooden springs, D and D, serving as a reach for the vehicle, and one or more metal springs, I, arranged between said wooden springs and having flexible connections with the said head-piece and the rear axle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the front and rear axles, of the metal spring I, the flexible straps by which the said spring is connected with said axles, and the buckles by which the tension of the said spring may be varied, substantially as set forth.
WM. BLUME. Witnesses:
GEO. B. THOMPSON, Gno. H. PERIGO.
