IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 223,063, dated December 30, 1879; application filed June 7, 1879.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, JOHN GUIELBARHON OULSON, of Upper Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device forGombining a Sleigh and Wheeled Vehicle, of which the following is a speciiication. y
The invention relates to any and all horsepropelled Wheeled vehicles, whereby they can be converted into sleighs by their own materials differently arranged.
The object of my invention is toprovide an arrangement for converting a buggy into a sleigh or cutter by using the springs of the buggy (which also serve as connecting-rods for the buggy) as runners for the sleigh by simply arranging them differentlyon the same buggy-box; and the invention is described more minutely as follows:
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 1s a perspective oi' a device embody ing my invention as applied to a Wheeled vehicle. Fig. 2 represents the deyice as applied to a sleigh.
In Fig. l, A is a common ordinary buggyl box, B, the hind axle; O, the front axle; D,
the bolster.; E E, the buggy springs or runners, which are made of spring-steel, or that part of them which needs to spring.
To arrange my device as a buggy, cross the springs E E and secure them to the aXle B at K K, and on the bolster D at 0 o, by means of clips, and secure the buggy-box A to them at H and i z' by means of bolts, and stay them by a clip at a'.
To arrange my device into a sleigh, release the springs E E by nnscrcwing the clips at K K, 0 o, and 5c, remove the running-gears of the buggy, unscrew the bolts at i i, and place the springs or runners parallel and bolt them on the buggy-boXA at I I, in the manner as shown in Fig. 2. Then bolt the brace F to the runners at S, and secure it underneath the boXA by a bolt. More similar braces may be used, if needed. Then fasten on the thill-bar P by means of clips at the points V V, and the sleigh is complete.
The brace remains on the buggy-box all the time, both as a buggy and a sleigh. It has a plate-step screwed on at S for a step to the buggy-box, and on the sleigh it is used for a brace with the step-plate removed.
I do not confine myself strictly to this mode of using' my device. The runners could be made rigid and have springs applied to them.
What I claim is- The combination ot' the spring-runners E with the body A, clips K, axles B and C, and bolster D. the said runners being adjust-able on the body, as described, whereby they are adapted to serve eitherI as springs for a wagon or as runners for a sleigh, substantially as described.
