Abstract

1497111 Alkali-metal silicate composition IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Jan 1976 [18 Feb 1975] 6773/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A composition suitable for use as a bonding/impregnating agent in the formation of foundry moulds or cores from sand comprises (a) water and dissolved therein (b) at least one alkali-metal silicate and (c) formose. The solution may also comprise (d) formaldehyde and (e) a compound which forms a resin therewith, or (f) such a resin (e.g. a phenol-, urea- and/or melamine-formaldehyde resin). The formose may be preformed or formed in situ from formaldehyde (e.g. in the presence of Ca(OH) 2 and dextrose). The composition may contain 1-6 parts by wt. of silicate (calculated as SiO 2 ) per part of formose and 4-30 parts per part of resin.
