Abstract

1492821 Urea-formaldehyde resins; foundry sand BRITISH STEEL CORP (CHEMICALS) Ltd 7 Jan 1976 [8 Jan 1975] 798/75 Headings C3R and C3N A resin binder for foundry sand comprises the reaction product of 15 to 40% by weight of urea, 25 to 45% by weight of formaldehyde, 10 to 30% by weight of furfuryl alcohol and 10 to 30% by weight of a glycol, preferably ethylene glycol. The formaldehyde may be introduced as formalin, paraformaldehyde or a compound which releases formaldehyde under the reaction conditions. Aqueous caustic soda may be mixed with the four reactants and the binder formed by heating under reflux. The binder may be mixed with sand and an acid hardener to form a foundry mould or core.
