Abstract
1,248,349. Phenol/amine/furfural or furfuryl alcohol resins. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 19 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 62115/69. Headings C3N and C3R. A thermosetting resin suitable for binding sand particles, is prepared by condensing 0À1 to 1À0 mol. of phenol with 0À3 to 1À0 mol. of urea or a urea derivative such as thiourea, a methyl urea, a methylol urea, melamine, ameline or benzoguanamine, 0À1 to 1À0 mol. of furfural or furfuryl alcohol and 2À0 to 4À0 mol. of an aliphatic aldehyde. The phenol may be phenol, cresol or 3,5-xylenol. The aldehyde may be formalin. A catalyst, e.g. NaOH, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide or a basic oxide may be added. The condensate may be mixed with aqueous ammonium nitrate and urea as hardener and used to bind sand particles. In examples, phenol, formalin and urea are first mixed. Then further phenol, further formalin, possibly further urea or urea derivative and furfural or furfuryl alcohol are added. Finally, the NaOH catalyst is added.
