Abstract

A binder for use in foundry moulds comprises an acid-hardenable furan-, phenol-, urea- or melamine-aldehyde resin or a mixture thereof and a silane R<SP>1</SP>-Si(OR 3 ), wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl radical containing a group capable of reaction with the resin and the groups R are each C 1-6 alkyl or C 1-6 alkoxy-C 1-6 alkyl radicals. The silane may amount to 0À1-3À0 wt. per cent of the resin, and the binder may amount to 0À5-3À0 wt. per cent of the aggregate with which it is mixed to give a foundry mix. In examples, the resins used are a phenolformaldehyde resin (1: 1À2 molar ratio, Mg(OH) 2 catalysed) and a furfuryl alcohol/urea/formaldehvde resin, the silane is NH 2 -(CH 2 ) 2 -NH-(CH 2 ) 3 -Si(OCH 3 ) or NH 2 -(CH 2 ) 3 -Si(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 , the aggregate is quartz sand, and the hardener is 60% aqueous p-toluenesulphonic acid or 75% H 3 PO 4 .
