Abstract

A binder for siliceous material based on a phenol-aldehyde resin, an alkyl phenol-formaldehyde resin, a furfural-furfuryl alcohol or furfuryl alcohol resin, or an aminoplast resin, contains 0,05%-5%, preferably 0,1%-0,5%, based on the dry weight of the resin, of an organo-silicon compound of general formula: RnSiX4-n where R is an alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl radical containing at least one hydroxy or amino group reactive with the resin, X is an alkoxy or aryloxy group, a hydroxy group or a halogen atom reactive with the siliceous material. The aminoplast resins may be of the urea, thiourea or melamine types. Organo-silicon compounds specified are g -aminopropyl-triethoxysilane, d : d -diaminobutylb -aminoethyldimethoxysilane, p-aminophenyl-triphenoxysilane, p-hydroxyphenyl-trichlorosilane, di-p-hydroxyphenyl-diethoxysilane and p-aminophenylmethyltriethoxysilane. In the examples, g -aminopropyl-triethoxysilane modified novolac and resol phenol-aldehyde resins and urea-formaldehyde resins are used to bond (1) glass fibres; (2) olivine stone particles and (3) silicon carbide powder.
