Abstract

1495556 Stepped piston engines NORTON VILLIERS Ltd 10 Feb 1975 [10 Nov 1973] 52293/73 Heading F1B A two-stroke I.C. engine has one or more cylinders each containing a stepped piston, each cylinder and piston having a pumping part of larger diameter and a working part of smaller diameter, air being delivered from the pumping part or parts of the cylinder(s) and is characterized in that the engine is provided with means to receive a portion of the air from the pumping part of the cylinder and to feed the portion of air as secondary air to an emission control device where it mixes, when the engine is in operation, with the exhaust gases discharged from the working part(s) of the cylinder(s). The pumping part 15 of the piston delivers air only to two receivers 30, when recess 33 uncovers two ports 32 as the piston approaches T.D.C. At the same time some air (secondary air) leaves the pumping cylinder by union 28 and non-return valve 27 and through nozzle 25 is ejected into annular space 24 between the wall of an exhaust passage leading from exhaust port 18, and a heatresistant metal sleeve 23. The secondary air mixes with the exhaust gases to promote after-combustion in thermal reactor 20. Valve 22 causes turbulence to mix the air and exhaust gas. As the piston approaches B.D.C. the ports 32 are uncovered and air from the receivers scavenges and re-fills the working cylinders. Fuel is injected into the receivers 30, passages 31 or the combustion chamber. In a multi-cylinder engine, the cylinders are grouped in pairs and the pumping part of one piston/cylinder supplies air to the other cylinder. A receiver may be common to more than one cylinder but in all cases, the receiver volume is at least three times the swept volume of the pumping part of one cylinder. The swept volume of the pumping part is 1À3 to 1À4 times the swept volume of the working part. Fig. 4 shows an engine having a stepped piston working at each end of a single cylinder. Part 83 of piston 79 controls exhaust ports 84. Inlet ports 87 are controlled by part 81 of piston 78. There is a spark-plug 91 and fuel injector 90.
