Abstract

149,519. Griffiths, G. J. Aug. 1, 1919. Gear-cutting.-In a shaping-machine for generating gear-teeth by rolling a blank H with reference to a reciprocating rack-shaped cutter P, and specially suitable for cutting cluster gears, where several gears J, H are formed in one piece, the blank J, H is carried by a spindle C' mounted in a rotatable sleeve C carried by a saddle B sliding on the bed A, and rotated by a spur wheei D engaging a stationary rack E. The cutter slide O is carried by the bracket L, adjusted vertically by the screw M. The machine can be made entirely automatic by the usual devices. The bed A and cutter P may be sufficiently long to complete a gear in one traverse, or the blank may be indexed and cut in several traverses. The rack E and pinion D are adjustable according to the blank to be cut.
