Abstract
1493505 Coaxial cable STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 10 April 1975 14760/75 Heading H1A Bonding between the return conductor of a coaxial submarine cable and the plastics dielectric layer inside it is promoted by polarizing the dielectric's outer surface. The dielectric 1, of e.g. polyethylene, already formed on to an inner conductor is poured through polarizing means 4, which may be a corona discharge or flame unit, then a longitudinally reamed return conductor 6, of e.g. aluminium, is applied by a forming mill 5. A vacuum tube 7 connects this to a sheath extruder 8 and the heat of extrusion melts the outer layer of the dielectric and bonds it to the return conductor. The inner surface of the conductor may be pre-treated and additional heating means, e.g. an R.F. coil, used.
