Abstract
1492751 Ignition systems SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 May 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 04876/74 Heading F1B An ignition system includes an ignition circuit for supplying electrical energy to discharge between electrodes of an igniter 3 that is adapted to be mounted on an engine 18 with one of the electrodes grounded thereto and the circuit is electrically insulated from the engine such as to be grounded thereto at the igniter alone. The ignition circuit may be coupled to the igniter by means of a screened electrical cable 2 and the screening 11 of the cable may be grounded to the engine at the igniter alone. The screening of the cable may be both electrostatic and electromagnetic. Screens (not shown) of material having a relatively high electrical conductivity may be used to partition an ignition unit into three regions. The igniter may have three electrodes, the additional electrode providing a triggering impulse to initiate discharge across a main electrode gap. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the housing 5' need not be connected with the electromagnetic screening of the cable but may be grounded separately to a part of the engine. An igniter of air-gap type may be employed.
