Abstract

149,241. Colvin, C. H. July 19, 1919, [Convention date]. Magnetic compasses.-In a liquid compass, particularly for use on aircraft, the card is provided with two sets of graduations one set 16 being on the upper surface and the other set 15 on the cylindrical surface of the card, and the two sets of graduations being so arranged that the north point of the one set coincides with the south point of the other. The graduations 15, 16 are read against diametrically opposite lubber lines 17, 18 respectively so that either reading indicates the course of the aircraft. The card is mounted on a pivot 14 in a liquid-containing bowl, the graduations 15, 16 being respectively read through the transparent side 9 and the transparent cover 10. The liquid in the bowl serves to damp out erratic movements of the card.
