Abstract

1490160 Hydroxypropyl cellulose SOC NOVACEL SA 23 May 1975 [30 May 1974 2 April 1975] 22811/75 Heading C3A Hydroxypropyl cellulose is made by forming alkali cellulose by treatment of finely-divided cellulose with aqueous alkali, adding propylene oxide, homogenizing the mixture and then etherifying by raising the temperature. The mixture contains a diluent in the weight proportion of 0À5 to 4À0 with respect to the cellulose, this diluent is added at any stage after the formation of the alkali cellulose. Mixed ethers may also be obtained by adding another, ionic, etherifying agent to the alkali cellulose and stirring for at least thirty minutes at ambient temperature before adding propylene oxide. Monochloroacetic acid, its sodium salt and propane saltone are exemplified, diethylaminoethyl hydrochloride, 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride and 2,3 - epoxypropyltriethylammonium chloride are also mentioned. The preferred diluents are hydrocarbons; heptane being exemplified.
