Abstract

1489619 Matrix displays UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS FOUNDATION 30 Dec 1974 [30 May 1974] 56071/74 Heading G5C A method of shifting data across a gas discharge display/memory panel having rows of display and transfer cells connected to sources V Y , V SH1 , V SH2 , includes applying erase signals to each row of cells when the data has been shifted to the next row. Signals V X , V Y , V SH1 , V SH2 are applied to the electrodes so that initially V X -V Y is a sustain signal and V X - V SH1 , V X -V SH2 are erase signals. At the beginning of a shift cycle, data is shifted to the first rows of transfer cells by a phase change in V SH1 which alters V X -V SH1 to a sustain signal on the first rows. The phase of voltage V Y is changed to alter V X -V Y to an erase signal. Data is moved successively to the second row of transfer cells and to the display cells by applying a sustain signal to the respective row and an erase signal to the row from which the signal has been transferred. Alternate rows in the X array are grounded to prevent undesired data shifting. In another embodiment data can be shifted in both X and Y directions.
