Abstract
1489102 Coating with carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides CIBA-GEIGY AG 7 Feb 1975 [7 Feb 1974 (2)] 5344/75 Headings C7F and C7U A substrate is coated with a carbide, nitride or carbonitride of Fe, B, Si or a transition metal of group IVB to VIB of the periodic table e.g. Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W or U by reaction with a compound of the Formula:- where X is Cl, -CN, -CH 2 -NH-CH 2 CN, -CH 2 N (CH 2 CN) 2 , -CH 2 -N-CH 2 CH 2 N (CH 2 CN) 2 , an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms or or -N (CH 2 ) m where R 1 and R 2 are H or a C 1 -4 alkyl group and m is 4 to 7, an alkenyl group with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, which is unsubstituted or substituted with a halogen atom or a cycioalkyl group with 3 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group with 6 to 10 carbon atoms, either of which can be unsubstituted or substituted with halogen atoms, methyl, groups or ;roups, and X 1 is an alkylene group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, an alkenylene group with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, a phenylene or cyclohexylene group, either of which can be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms or ;roups or X 1 represents a group of the Formula: - Many Examples are given of the compounds. The reaction may take place in the presence of H, H Cl or N, and argon may be used as a carrier gas. The Fe, B, Si and transition metals may be in the form of elements, hydrides, carbonyls, carbonylhydrides, organometallic compounds, and halides. The reaction may take place in a plasma. The reactants may be gaseous or one may be a liquid or a suspension with which the substrate is impregnated. The substrate may be metal, e.g. Fe, Ti, W, Mo, Nb, V, Ta, sintered metal carbide, e.g. bonded with Co, carbon, ceramics, glass, oxides, nitrides, carbides or B or Si.
