Abstract
1494157 Coating cemented carbides BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 12 March 1976 [14 March 1975] 10029/76 Addition to 1408294 Heading C7F A cemented carbide article is coated with a layer, up to 50 Á thick, of a refractory material consisting, at least partly, of a solid phase based on Si, Al, O and N. The coating may be a combination of Si 3 N 4 and/or AIN with SiO 2 and/or Al 2 O 3 , a solid solution of Si 3 N 4 and Al 2 O 3 , or a compound of the Formula Si 6-x Al x O x N 8-x formed by replacing Si and N atoms in #Si 3 N 4 with Al and O atoms. The refractory material may also contain Li, Mg, Be or Ga. The coating may be applied by sputtering, vapour deposition, or, preferably, by chemical vapour deposition, by reacting at least one silicon halide with at least one aluminium halide with any of the following combinations H 2 -N 2 -CO 2 NH 3 -H 2 -CO 2 , N 2 -H 2 -H 2 O, or NH 3 -H 2 O; the preferred halides are SiCl 4 and AlCl 3 . The Examples relate to applying Si-Al-O-N coatings to a cemented carbide of WC/TiC/NbC in a Co matrix. One or more intermediate layers, of carbides, borides, nitrides or oxides of Group III-Group VI elements, may be interposed between the cemented carbide and the coating.
