Abstract
1488677 Sparking-plug NIPPON TOKUSHU TOGYO KK 30 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 42292/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division H1] To increase the effective length of the suppressor resistor 4 in the central bore 1b of spark-plug 1 it is sealed to electrode 2, and/or terminal screw 3 by an auxiliary resistor seal 6 and/or 5, comprising a glass and a semi-conductive material. As shown, the seal 5 is of conventional conductive glass, and seal 6 is composed of 10 to 60% semi-conductive material, 0 to 30% aggregate and 40-90% glass. The semi-conductive material consists of at least one metal oxide, e.g. TiO 2 , Nb 2 O 5 , NiO, La 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , ThO 2 and ZnO and at least one metal carbide, e.g. TiC, SiC and B 4 C, the carbide constituting 0À1 to 30%, preferably 0À5 to 10 wt. per cent of the total weight of the seal. The aggregate is bentonite, clay, zircon or the mixture thereof, and the glass may be borosilicate glass. The resistance of the seal is preferably 100 to 3,000 #/cm<SP>2</SP>, and that of the resistor 4, 1 to 30 k#/cm<SP>2</SP>. The composition of the resistor 4 is preferably 0À2 to 4% of carbonaceous material, e.g. carbon black or glycerin, 10 to 70% of aggregate, e.g. clay or zircon, 0 to 20% of semi-conductive material, e.g. a mixture of TiO and TiC, and the remainder of barium borate glass. Specific Examples of seal and resistor compositions are given.
