Abstract

1488580 Growing oysters MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 6 March 1975 9419/75 Heading A1A Immature shellfish, preferably oysters, are supported on cultch in an aquatic growth medium at a concentration up to ten shellfish per gallon, a temperature of 18-25‹C and a salinity of 15-35 parts per thousand and a regulated supply of foodstuff nutritionally equivalent to the diatom Cyclotella nana is added, preferably in the minimum number of equally spaced uniform feedings, to avoid a concentration or turbidity greater than that of 5 x 10<SP>5</SP> cells of C. nana per ml. to provide a daily ration according to the equation C=Ah<SP>2</SP> where C= n# cells C, nana per shellfish per day, A= a constant between 0.3 Î 10<SP>6</SP> and 1.25 x 10<SP>6</SP> and h=average height of shellfish in mm. C. nana in aqueous medium at a concentration of 10<SP>6</SP> to 10<SP>7</SP> cells per ml, algae such as Scenedesmus and Actin or artificial foodstuffs are suitable for feeding. The growth medium is filtered, purified by irradiation and continuously aerated.
