Abstract
148,801. Huth Ges., Dr. E. F., and K³hn, L. April 3, 1919, [Convention date]. Wireless telegraphy and telephony.- Oscillations produced by a thermionic valve are modulated in accordance with the signals to be transmitted by varying the impedance of a shunt across the valve. The impedance shunt may comprise an auxiliary valve with its grid potential controlled by a microphone, and it is connected directly across the plate and filament of the oscillating valve or across the inductance of its output circuit. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the plate circuit of the generating-valve r includes a portion of the aerial inductance and the battery e shunted by a condenser. A tuned grid circuit t is also provided. The impedance shunt may be an ohmic resistance, but, as shown, comprises a valve b with its plate a and filament k connected to the plate and filament of the oscillator, and with its grid connected, preferably through a transformer, to a microphone circuit. A variable amount of energy is thus diverted from the aerial and the emitted waves are modulated in amplitude in accordance with the signals. A choke coil d may be placed in the leads of the source q. The grid g of the tube b has a suitable normal voltage, say of 30 volts. The connexion from the plate a may be made to a point on the aerial inductance beyond the point of connexion of the plate of the oscillatory valve r. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to a modification shown in Fig. 6 (Cancelled), in which the plate battery q of the generating valve is connected across a condenser k1, and the control impedance comprises a valve b connected across the battery q. In this from the condenser k<1> forms a short circuit for the oscillatory current, but modulation is effected owing to the valve b forming a variable shunt path for the direct current supplied from the source q. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted, but is the subject of a divided application 170,013.
