Abstract
1487869 Walking beam conveyers for steel sections BIRDSBORO CORP 16 April 1975 [9 May 1974] 15690/75 Heading B8A [Also in Division B3] Steel sections 86 (Fig. 2) proceeding from a rolling mill (12) (Fig. 1, not shown) and shears (17), (18), on either of two rollerways 35, 36 are transferred, either in single succession, or (as shown) after being formed into stacked groups, on to fixed transfer bars 41 on which cooling is designed to take place. The sections are conveyed over the bars 41 by cyclically moving bars 42. Eventually the sections are removed from the bars 41 by being picked up by notched portions 267 (Fig. 7) of rotating pick-up arms 265. When a stack is to be removed from the bars 41, a cylinder 282 is energized, and thereby lifts arms 273 to the position of Fig. 8 (not shown). The arms 273 carry notched pockets 272, and also curved guide bars 274. Each section 86 of a stack is successively picked up by the rotating notched portions 267 of the arms 265. The sections are formed into stacks on a pocket-shaped first notch 71 of the bars 41 by being engaged, when lying flat, by a reciprocating member 85 (Fig. 2). A mechanism is described (Fig. 4, not shown) for altering the line of action of the member 85 as each successive section is turned over. Each series of rollers of the rollerways 35, 36, have respective associated series of lifting members 38 and 39. These act first as stops (in the position shown in dot-dash lines in Fig. 2) to retain a section on the rollerway until the time is right for it to slide down into the first notch 71 (or in the case of the rollerway 36, an upper notch 73). A mechanism is described (Fig. 5, not shown) for providing the cyclic movement (dot-dash line A) to the bars 42. Part of this mechanism includes an arrangement which enables the horizontal component of this movement to be increased (dot-dash line B). The approach of sections on the rollerways 35, 36 is sensed by heat detectors. Information produced thereby is fed to logic circuitry (Fig. 9h, not shown) which controls the time of operation of the lifting members 38 and 39, and the time of commencement of the bars 42. If the time interval between successive bars is less than a predetermined amount, the commencement of operation of the bars 42 is delayed so that both bars can be picked up simultaneously. If time interval is greater than the predetermined amount, the bars are conveyed successively.
