1486889 Magnetic separators IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY and CRYOGENIC CONSULTANTS Ltd 28 Aug 1974 [11 Sept 1973 17 July 1974] 42566/73 and 31657/74 Heading B2J A magnetic separator for separating magnetically susceptible particles, such as hematite, from non-magnetic or less magnetically susceptible particles, such as quartz, comprises an inlet channel for a gas or liquid containing the mixture and leading to an arcuate channel separation zone 10 from which lead first and second outlet channels, a magnet 17 near the zone and nearer the second than the first channel outlet so that the magnetic particles are attracted into the second channel. It is said that as the flow swirls round the passage 10 particles tend to collect in the corner 16 of the rectangular passage, while those which are magnetically susceptible are drawn from the corner 16 towards the magnet 17 into the corner 18. The passage 10 may be “ to several revolutions in content. The inlet channel is tangentially or reversely carried to the separation passage 10. In a modification, the passage has a cross-section of parallelogram shape with the bottom directed downwards towards the outer edge and the magnet (26) is internal, the magnetic particles collecting in the innermost lower corner (28), Fig. 2 (not shown). The passage 10 may be open-topped and is opened to atmosphere at its outlet end where the particles from the corners 16. 18 issue as two streams. The magnetic fields may be of 0.5 to 60 kilograms with a super-conducting magnet.
