Abstract
1486352 Oxidized starch binder for refractories STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 15 July 1976 [23 July 1975] 30835/75 Headings C1A and C1J A method for making a refractory article comprises pressing a mixture comprising refractory particles and, as a binder, water and an oxidized starch to form the article. The oxidized starch may be starch oxidized by NaOCl to give a product containing -COOH groups and typically being up to 4 wt.% of the mixture. Water may be 1-5% (wt.). The refractory material may be dead-burned magnesia, stabilized dolomite, chrome ore, alumina, silica, zirconia or a mixture or coclinker of two or more of these. In Examples, the refractories used were (1) chrome ore and calcined magnesite, (2) as (1), (3) deadburned magnesite. Typical sintering temperatures are 1550‹-1800‹ C or below 1400‹ C (for silica bricks).
