Abstract
1486292 Bulking yarn CHALLENGE-COOK BROS INC 22 Nov 1974 [23 Nov 1973] 50743/74 Heading D1L Yarn in bundles is bulked in a tumbler by raising the temp. of the yarn with heated air and steam, continuing the heat and steam treatment until the yarn is heat-set, and then cooling the yarn whilst removing moisture therefrom. The process may be carried out in tumbler 2, disposed within housing 1, provided with an external air circulation system containing a cooling coil 15, a steam injector 35, a blower 22, and a heating coil 26. The heating and cooling coils may be by-passed through ducts 27 and (37), [Fig. 7 (not shown)] respectively. The inlet ducts 25 and 27 are connected to housing 1 by breakable, pneumatic seal 30, [Fig. 3 (not shown)]. The sequence of treatment steps may be as follows. The yarn is first tumbled without air circulation to relax the fibres, and then whilst the tumbling is continued (a) air, heated by coil 26, together with live steam from nozzle 35, is circulated to raise the temp. of the yarn to 180-200F, (b) the temp. is then raised with further heat and steam to 270F to heat-set the yarn, (c) the yarn is then cooled and the moisture content reduced using coil 15, (d) and then the yarn is further cooled with cool air which by-passes the heater duct 25, gate 28 being closed and gate 29 open. Subsequently the circulating air is vented via stack 24 by closing gate 29 and the seal 30 broken to open the tumbler to ambient conditions.
